AI is becoming impossible to avoid. It’s no longer something users opt into. You don’t have to open ChatGPT to “use” AI because it’s embedded in the products and services we rely on every day.

Customer support flows now route users through AI agents before they ever reach a human. Netflix recommendations are increasingly shaped by AI-driven inference rather than explicit user input. Productivity tools summarize meetings, prioritize tasks, and suggest decisions without exposing the logic behind them.

AI has moved from a cool feature to an essential piece of infrastructure. And that shift fundamentally changes how we need to think about the role of UI and UX in product development The core work is no longer just about designing intuitive interfaces that help users operate software without a manual. It’s about designing systems that help people understand, evaluate, and act on machine-generated decisions.

The central challenge for product teams in 2026 won’t be making AI more powerful. It will be making AI make sense to the humans who are now required to interact with it.

AI’s capabilities are accelerating faster than people’s ability to trust or understand them. That gap has consequences. In short, AI raises the cost of bad UX and dramatically lowers tolerance for unvalidated design decisions.

The teams that succeed will be those who prioritize clarity, validation, and human judgment over feature density, automation for its own sake, or AI spectacle.

As human-centered designers, how do we need to change our approach to ensure AI systems interact well with people? How can we make AI more understandable, trustworthy, and useful while calming fears that it’s secretly plotting our demise?

From Interface Design to Decision Design

For decades, UI was a window (pun intended) for users to interact with systems. It served as a translation layer. Users input commands, systems returned results, and interfaces helped people navigate complexity through buttons, menus, dashboards, and controls.

That fundamental UI role hasn’t disappeared, but it’s shifting.

UI/UX designers are still translators, but with better tools at their disposal. AI removes the need for much of the mechanical translation work that UI designers used to do. Instead of guiding users through predefined paths, products increasingly respond through conversation, inference, and recommendation.

It’s like traveling to another country with a language phrasebook in your pocket versus speaking through a live translator. Previously, product teams had to anticipate every possible need and organize information so users could find it. Now, AI can surface answers dynamically through conversation. The current UX challenge is less about helping users find information, and more about helping them decide what to do with it.

Consider tools like GitHub Copilot or Salesforce Einstein. Their value doesn’t come from exposing more controls or introducing new features. It comes from intelligently suggesting relevant actions. Accept this change. Prioritize that lead. Automate this task. These are decisions, not commands.

This means a primary UX outcome is no longer efficiency or time on task. It’s decision quality.

Good AI, like all good UX/UI designs, reduces uncertainty. It helps users understand whether a recommendation is reasonable, what assumptions it’s based on, and what happens if the user follows or rejects the AI’s advice.

The designer’s job now is to create interfaces that help users evaluate AI outputs, decide whether to trust those outputs, and understand what to do next.

Designing for speed without also designing for confidence is no longer an option.

Ease of Use is Giving Way to Trust and Understanding

Ease of use and speed have been table stakes for a long time. AI has just emphasized this even more. But what differentiates AI-powered products is not how quickly they produce an answer, but how well users understand why it gave that answer and what it means.

We see this consistently when testing AI-driven insights with experienced decision-makers. Business analysts, team leaders, and experienced users don’t just ask “How fast can the AI work?” They ask “Why should I trust it?” When it’s their reputation and job on the line, they want to know that AI is not leading them astray.

In enterprise products we’ve tested where users were presented with AI-generated recommendations, their first reaction wasn’t pure excitement. It was a healthy dose of skepticism. They wanted to see specific inputs, data sources, and confidence levels alongside AI recommendations. Without that context, the recommendations felt risky, regardless of how accurate they may be.

People want AI to show its work. They expect clear explanations, predictable behavior, and visibility into how the system has reasoned its way to certain conclusions. When these explanations are thin or inconsistent, trust erodes quickly. And once trust is lost, adoption stalls.

The new and exciting challenge for product teams is how to help AI build trust with users. Designing for trust means making the underlying AI logic and reasoning visible at the right moments. It’s not about flooding users with data, but giving them access to evidence when it matters. It also means being explicit about uncertainty instead of hiding it behind confident language.

UX success is no longer measured by the question, “Can users use it?” but by asking “Do users trust it?”

Agentic AI Requires New Mental Models

Agentic AI changes the relationship between users and systems. When software begins acting on behalf of users, traditional mental models break down.

In traditional systems, UI/UX designers could build interfaces that closely align with predictable user expectations. AI agents are by nature unstructured. Their outputs vary and designers have less control. The same prompt may lead to different actions depending on context, memory, or learned behavior.

This means we need to plan for flexibility. We need to help users understand what the AI can do independently, when it’s acting with the user’s permission, and how to intervene, correct, or stop it. Users also need to know who’s accountable when something goes wrong.

We see these new mental models emerging in tools like autonomous scheduling assistants, customer service agents, and workflow automation platforms. When boundaries are unclear, users either trust the system too much and let go of their own agency and responsibility or they disengage entirely.

Good UX provides guardrails. It communicates roles, permissions, and limits clearly. It gives users the same sense of control that well-designed interfaces always have, even when outcomes are dynamic.

The goal is not to constrain AI behavior unnecessarily, but to ensure users feel informed and in control so they’re not surprised by invisible decisions.

Personalization is Now Questioned, Not Just Celebrated

Personalization has been seen as a competitive advantage. It was a prerequisite to show users you knew them and their needs and could deliver what they wanted with minimal effort on their part. Now, it’s becoming more of a liability.

As AI systems infer preferences, behaviors, and intent, users are becoming more sensitive to how that information is used. Experiences that feel clever without explicit user consent increasingly feel invasive and manipulative.

The emerging standard is shifting from “AI that knows you” to “AI that respects you.”

We’re seeing this tension in recommendation engines, onboarding flows, and AI-driven marketing tools. When personalization lacks transparency or choice, it raises questions about how user data is being used and protected.

That means we need to design personalization as something users opt into, adjust, and understand. Relevance matters more than cleverness. Predictability matters more than surprise. We need to treat user permissions as a privilege to provide personalized experiences, not a right to exploit data.

AI already raises alarms about personal safety and security. Good UX needs to give users agency over how AI adapts to them, rather than forcing adaptation without explanation.

Keeping Humans in the Loop is a Core Design Discipline

In traditional UI/UX design, the need for human intervention in workflows is treated as an edge case. “Press zero to talk to a representative” or “In case of emergency” escalations are only there to catch scenarios the system isn’t designed to handle.

AI has changed that.

As AI systems take on more responsibility with more autonomy, edge case workflows are becoming more central to the experience. When interacting with AI systems, users need ways to easily review, override, and escalate. It’s essential to building trust and safety.

In AI-powered support tools, for example, users expect smooth handoffs when automation reaches its limits. If escalation is slow or confusing, confidence collapses quickly. There’s only so many times a user will rephrase an AI prompt before giving up.

These transitions between humans and AI require strategic, intentional, and intuitive design. When should humans step in? How easily can users intervene? What happens after an override?

In the old UI/UX mindset, human judgment was a source of friction. The aim was to reduce cognitive load. Now, it’s a safeguard and a value signal. Products that hide or minimize human involvement often feel brittle. Products that integrate it thoughtfully feel resilient.

The end goal is the same as it ever was. We want to design seamless experiences that help accomplish tasks with as little friction as possible. But what used to be safety net workflows now become first-class UX problems that need expertise and deep thinking to solve.

Validation Matters More Than Innovation

While AI is dramatically lowering the cost of building new apps and systems, it’s raising the cost of getting it wrong.

Product teams can now generate prototypes, features, and flows faster than ever. But speed without validation can embed risk into your system.

We’ve always advocated for user testing as a reality check on designer intuition and internal product team consensus. AI makes real-world validation even more critical. Assumptions scale faster, which means mistakes propagate further.

The lesson from real-world experiments, like Anthropic’s AI-managed vending machine, is that AI systems can still be broken in unique and novel ways when exposed to real human behavior. We need faster and more nimble experiments to test and validate AI-powered assumptions and solutions so we can better understand what needs to be fixed.

We need to shift our focus from crafting artifacts to validating outcomes. We need to create tighter and stronger outcome-based evaluation methods. We need faster feedback loops and stronger evaluation criteria. We need clear success metrics tied to user goals, not just internal business benchmarks.

UX Debt Compounds Faster in AI Systems

AI has a way of quickly exposing weak foundations.

Poor information architecture, inconsistent data models, and unclear feedback loops become visible immediately when automation is layered on top.

As AI automates more decisions and processes, it won’t fix your UX debt. It will accelerate its consequences and carry it further downstream.

When AI systems act on flawed assumptions, small design gaps turn into systemic failures. Recovery becomes harder, not easier.

Addressing UX and technical debt early is no longer optional. It’s a prerequisite for responsible AI adoption. The longer you wait, the more exponentially harder and riskier it will get.

Outcomes Matter More than Features

AI is forcing a long-overdue shift in how UX value is measured. We’ve never been fans of measuring progress solely by the number of features or artifacts launched.

Screens, flows, and polish have never been proxies for success. What matters is whether users make better decisions, feel more confident, and achieve meaningful outcomes.

We’ll be making less screens and mapping less workflows. We won’t be able to polish designs and make a substandard product “feel” good. It will have to actually do good in the eyes of users, or it will be abandoned.

In an AI-powered world, UX success metrics look different:

  • Decision confidence
  • Error recovery quality
  • Trust over time
  • Real-world impact of AI-driven actions

Teams that still treat UX as surface-level refinement are already falling behind. UX is becoming an increasingly core strategic function every day.

Design Your AI for Clarity and Outcomes

The future of UX is not about control panels or feature density. It’s about comprehension, accountability, and clarity.

AI raises the stakes. Bad UX no longer just frustrates users. It misleads them.

The teams that succeed in 2026 won’t be the ones that ship the most AI. They’ll be the ones that ship the most understandable AI.
