AI is changing how we make decisions, but most users still don't trust it enough to act on its recommendations. The missing link isn't better algorithms. It's better UX. When AI-assisted decision making is backed by thoughtful interface design, users understand what the AI is doing, feel in control, and are far more likely to engage with it meaningfully.

Why Don't Users Trust AI-Assisted Decision Making?

AI can analyze enormous amounts of data, spot patterns humans miss, and surface recommendations faster than any expert. But even when it gets things right, people hesitate.

Study after study confirms the disconnect:

  • A 2023 international survey by the University of Queensland found only half of respondents were willing to trust AI at work.
  • A 2025 study by Omnisend found that 66% of consumers wouldn't let AI make purchases for them, even when it meant missing out on better deals.
  • A nationally representative poll from the Alan Turing Institute found that nearly two-thirds of the UK public felt uncomfortable with AI making decisions that significantly affected their lives.

This reluctance gets stronger in high-stakes environments, where a bad decision could hurt your professional reputation, personal finances, or general wellbeing.

Humans don't just want answers. We want reasons. We want to know how and why a recommendation was made, where the data came from, and whether the logic holds up.

That's a design problem.

What Is the UX Gap in AI Products?

The technical capabilities of AI have raced ahead of the user experience. Even the smartest systems can fall flat when there isn't a well-designed interface to help people make sense of what the AI is offering.

UX for AI-assisted decision making is about more than helpful hints or personalized responses. AI is helping us make serious decisions where people have something real on the line. In those cases, the UI needs to be more than cosmetic. It's foundational to how a user will respond in real-time to what the AI is offering.

When AI shows up in a product, users don't just want to see what the system thinks. They want to understand how it arrived at that conclusion so they can gauge whether to trust it.

A well-designed UX for AI can help users:

  • Know when and why AI is stepping in to help
  • Understand what went into the AI's recommendations
  • See how much confidence the system assigns to various options or possibilities
  • Interact with or override AI suggestions as needed
  • Learn how their input and feedback can improve future AI results

When these aspects of the interaction aren't supported, even a great AI model can feel either like a black box or an uninvited micromanager.

Here are six fundamental principles for designing around that.

How Should AI Be Positioned in a Decision-Making Interface?

1. Position AI as a Thought Partner, Not an Authority

Imagine being assigned a new teammate without any formal introduction. One day they just show up, start offering strong opinions, and you're expected to follow what they say.

That's what it can feel like when AI shows up in a product with no explanation.

To build trust, users need to first understand what role the AI is going to play in their decision-making process. Is it making suggestions based on user behavior? Is it compiling and prioritizing various possible options? Is it making future predictions based on current data?

The more explicit the role of the AI, the easier it is for users to plan how they want to use it as a meaningful part of their personal decision-making process. This is the foundation of collaboration.

It's up to us as designers to introduce AI and make its role explicit to users. This could be as simple as carefully crafting and placing microcopy in key moments when the AI is offering recommendations. Or it could be a detailed mapping of when and where your users need the most help in their workflow so you can introduce the AI at just the right place and time.

2. Make Confidence Visible and Actionable

AI systems work primarily on probability, but most UIs present AI outputs as facts. At the very least that can be misleading, and at the very worst it can be dangerous in situations where users are making important decisions for themselves and others.

Trust isn't built from pretending to be perfect. The more certain any system seems without justification, the more skeptical users can become.

Confidence indicators like signal strength bars or color-coded recommendations can help demonstrate visually how confident the AI is in specific recommendations. But it's also important to give users different ways to act based on these varying levels of certainty.

If the AI indicates it's 95% sure that an invoice is fraudulent, for example, then the UI can offer a fast-track button to help the user easily flag it. If the confidence level is only at about 60%, then it might get routed through another workflow before getting flagged.

By aligning UX behavior with AI confidence, you'll help users calibrate their decisions without forcing them to guess, or second-guess, their decisions.

3. Empower Users to Have Their Say

One of the fastest ways to lose user trust is to remove them from the equation. AI systems should support decision-making, not hijack it. A good AI interface gives users room to disagree. Instead of forcing a decision, it invites dialogue.

Let's say your app suggests a sales lead to follow up on, but the user already knows that lead is a dead end. Giving them a "Dismiss" or "Mark as not relevant" option, with a short form to educate the AI on why the suggestion wasn't useful, does two important things. It reinforces the user's authority and it helps your AI improve.

Even better is when the system can visibly learn from this. If the user marks something as irrelevant, the AI can respond with, "Got it. We'll deprioritize similar leads going forward." That small gesture can go a long way toward making the tool feel more collaborative and trustworthy.

Empowering users to push back on AI isn't just about improving the algorithm. It's about reinforcing a core design principle: users need to feel they're in control.

4. Support Exploration, Not Just Conclusions

The best thought partners don't just hand out final decisions. They help you explore your options. AI delivers its greatest value when it gives users the space to compare, evaluate, and weigh alternatives. People need help finding their way through complexity and narrowing their options so they can make solid decisions.

In environments where decisions carry a lot of weight, AI should be designed to support triage. That might mean grouping options into tiers like "High Fit," "Moderate Fit," and "Unlikely," or offering side-by-side comparisons with key differences highlighted.

Rather than replacing human judgment, the AI becomes a tool for structuring complex choices and highlighting useful distinctions. The point isn't to force a decision. It's to help users sort, weigh, and judge faster. If they can treat AI suggestions as possibilities rather than conclusions, they can augment their natural decision making process by leveraging the benefits of machine intelligence.

5. Set Realistic Expectations from the Start

Overpromising is a fast way to lose trust. If your product pitches AI as a flawless magical solution, your users are going to be disappointed, and maybe even angry, when it inevitably makes a mistake.

You need to clearly position the AI as a work-in-progress, not a magic bullet. Tell users what the AI is good at, where it might stumble, and how their input helps it get smarter. Onboarding experiences, interface cues, and even marketing language should frame AI as a collaborator, not a replacement. Show side-by-side examples of what AI can help with and where human judgment is still essential.

This builds credibility and trust. It also encourages users to see themselves as part of the process, not just recipients of its output, and helps them learn how to get the most value out of the AI features you've built.

6. Create Bite-Sized Interactions

When AI does complex tasks like reviewing analytics, comparing financial options, or summarizing long-form content, it can produce some pretty dense results. A wall of machine-generated text can feel daunting and overwhelming to users, even if the information is helpful.

A good UX solution needs to break through that wall. Instead of serving everything at once, create thoughtfully designed interactions that leverage progressive disclosure and break the information into digestible chunks.

This invites users to dig deeper into the details if and when they're ready, and it helps the user's relationship with AI feel less flat and robotic and more three-dimensional and personal.

You might start with a summary of the high-level takeaways followed by an invitation asking the user, "Would you like more detail?" with expandable and collapsible sections where they can explore more. Or you could offer visual representations like charts, maps, or widgets to help more visual learners process the results faster.

When users feel comfortable exploring AI suggestions through low-stakes intuitive interactions like tapping to compare options, sliding to filter results, or clicking into detailed data views, they can make sense of the information at their own pace. This helps them retain more details and feel more confident in their decisions.

The ultimate goal is a more fluid learning experience that matches how people absorb and act on information in the real world.

UX Is the Key to Building AI Trust

Building AI into your product isn't the hard part. Building AI that people actually want to use and trust is the real challenge.

AI can do incredible things, but it can't create value in a vacuum. A good AI interface doesn't just show what the machine thinks. It creates a dialogue. It explains itself. It invites input. And it helps users feel smarter, faster, and more capable.

As AI becomes more powerful, our responsibility as designers becomes clearer: keep humans at the center. Build interfaces that clarify, empower, and invite collaboration.

The best decisions come from humans and machines working and collaborating together. AI works best when it empowers users by providing clarity, context, and insight rather than trying to simply replace them. But it's the humans who bring nuance, experience, and values to the table.
